Section 4 of the Sultan’s Trail: Belgrade to Sofia

Following the Ancient Via Militaris – A Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman Crossroads

This section traces one of the Balkans’ most historic routes, connecting Belgrade (Serbia) to Sofia (Bulgaria) through river valleys, mountain passes, and centuries of layered empires. From Roman highways to Ottoman conquests and Orthodox monasteries, this trail is a journey through the heart of Balkan history.

Route Overview

• Direction: Belgrade → Smederevo → Niš → Bulgarian border → Sofia
• Historic Path: Follows the Via Militaris (Roman military road linking Singidunum/Belgrade to Constantinople).
• Terrain: Danube hills → Morava River valley → Stara Planina foothills → Nišava Gorge → Sofia Plain (1,000m).
• Key Themes:
