travellers Day Haarlem
Meet your Sultans Trail Friends
Every year at the end of the hiking and cycling season we meet in Haarlem, to share our Sultans Trail adventures, and tell the trail stories we all recognize and never grow tired of.
For the curious and the new-comers on the Sultanstrail there are always plenty of people to ask their questions, including the trailmanager of the 2500 km hiking trail, Max Smits and the Sultans Trail founder and trailmanager of 2200km cycle trail, Sedat Cakir.
This year we are very proud to announce an inspiring guest, the famous Austrian author Martin Zinggl, who will tell us (in English) about his experiences on the Sultans Trail. After his presentation he will answer all your questions and of course will sell signed copy’s of the book he wrote: “Das ist kein Spaziergang.“
Das ist kein Spaziergang by Martin Zinggl
The Viennese writer and ethnologist Martin Zinggl walked the SultansTrail to rediscover himself after a crisis in his life. With a smooth pen and black humor, he describes the sometimes arduous journey that many of us have taken before him, walking or cycling. He effortlessly connects the past and the present, and his observations will make you see the SultansTrail from a whole new perspective. Between bursts of laughter and empathy, you discover the essence of the Sultanstrail—the people and, above all, what connects them.
His choice of words and sentence structure reveal him to be a professional writer. Like a true artist, he paints a scene in just a few sentences, so vividly that you believe you were there. He does not shy away from the colorful Viennese idiom, fortunately always explained in footnotes at the bottom of the page.
It is a book that you want to read very slowly, because you will inevitably be disappointed when, once you reach page 285, you can no longer continue.
